Why I Didn’t Leave Jamberry Nails: An Honest Response to Ooh-La-La Polish

First off, I want to say, it sounds like the gal who wrote Ooh-La-La Polish had a genuinely frustrating and at times unfair experience.  If I had received that kind of customer service, I probably would have jumped ship too.  But, as a Jamberry consultant of 7 months (I started in June 2014), I want to share my testimony, because those on my team and above me have had a dramatically different experiences than Kelly at Ooh-La La.

Fact #1 – Jamberry is a new company.

As I write this on January 31, 2015, Jamberry still has UNDER 100,000 consultants.  It’s a baby, baby company, and has come such a long way already!  To put that 100,000 number in perspective, Mary Kay, another very popular Direct Sales company, has over 3 MILLION consultants.

Did you know that 50% of new businesses fail in the first year?  From a business growth perspective, starting out something new and managing the unexpectedly exponential growth is something that is very tricky to handle.  This is the phase where companies sink or swim.  Now, it might seem like Jamberry should have no problem here, because of how popular it is, but think about it… If Jamberry over-invested for the growth, if they couldn’t sustain that investment, they could face bankruptcy, or out of business, leaving all us consultants hanging out on the line.  The other option (aside from magically knowing exactly how aggressively you will grow) is to under-invest, which they have at times, (its easy to do when you don’t realize how huge you will boom).  The result is some of the things Kelly experienced.  Or other things, such as slow shipping, inventory going out of stock, and not enough people doing customer service to keep up with demand.

Jamberry, in my experience, has always stuck to the conservative side, which mean we consultants do experience occasional bumps in the road from this under-investing.  But here’s the thing.  I’m GLAD this happens. Jamberry chooses this route so they can always be sustainable, and this is a good thing.  Did you know that Jamberry is a debt-free company, and always has been?  They started it out of their garage, printing the wraps themselves, and built this incredible nail wrap dynasty!  I’d much rather they manage their growth conservatively like they have than spend more than we consultants can sell, and then go out of business.

Starting a business is tricky, and I think Jamberry is doing a great job adjusting to our insane love of this product.

Fact #2-  Jamberry always makes it right

If you’re already a Jamberry consultant, you’ve probably experienced an “under-investment” bump, and then been frustrated.  But you’ve also probably noticed that Jamberry always makes an effort to fix it.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been given extra product credits as an “I’m sorry,” or been given a chance to put in an order the day after the month closed because the web servers were too slow the night before due to the ridiculous boom in traffic.

Jamberry always makes it right.  Maybe they weren’t established enough back in 2012 and 2013, the days of Kelly from Ooh-La-La Polish, to do this in a systematic way like they are now…but I would encourage you not to judge Jamberry by her review, but by the review of the 85,000+ consultants who are loving this company today. Something tells me that if Kelly had started her Jamberry career a year later than she did, she would have had a much different experience.  Jamberry was just surviving its first year as a direct sales company…and wow, they did it!  I’m bummed for Kelly that she had the experience she did, because it’s not what the rest of us are experiencing today.

Fact #3-  Jamberry is a more mature company today than they were in 2012 and 2013

See, Jamberry made its foray into Direct Sales in 2012, and Kelly was one of the first 5,000 consultants (this has been confirmed by numerous members of Jamberry’s Founders Club). To put that in perspective, in June of 2014 when I joined, I was in the first 30,000!  The current number is closer to 90,000 consultants. Of course Kelly experienced some of those early growing pains.  Don’t judge the company today by the growing pains of when it was 17 times smaller!

Thanks to their conservative beginning, Jamberry is growing at a sustainable pace, and will be around for the long-haul because of it. They are gaining experience, re-investing to improve their resources for consultants and customers, and by golly, Jamberry is doing a damn good job!

….So before you make a quick decision based on an isolated review from a year and a half ago…

Do your research.  Talk to current consultants, and find out about their experience.  I’m sure they will be happy to share! Ask them hard questions about the bumps in the road, and if Jamberry made it right.  Get to know your potential sponsor.  Make sure you are comfortable with her.

And THEN make your decision, based on Jamberry as it stands today.  Because the Jamberry I know ALWAYS makes it right.

I am here, and will answer any questions you have in the comments (regardless of who you plan to join with, because I want people to understand the truth about Jamberry), or you can email me at enjoyingjams@gmail.com.

Why?  Well.. 3 reasons why!

1.  Black Friday is NOT OVER!  Originally the Black Friday wrap was only going to be available on Black Friday itself… but the traffic on Jamberry’s website was so high that some people couldn’t even order.  The solution? Jamberry extended the Black Friday wrap deal until midnight on Cyber Monday!  Yay Jamberry!

Back for Black: Everything you need to know about Black Friday, Jamberry Nail Wraps, and Unicorns!

Jamberry is quickly gaining popularity, and as it does, an interesting phenomena is developing:  THE ELUSIVE SEARCH FOR THE JAMBERRY UNICORN.

unicorn

Are you thinking, “Ok, what?  That made no sense.” Well, dear reader, read on!

The Origin of the Jamberry Unicorn
As you may know, Jamberry retires 40% of its catalogue every six months, to make room for more designs. There are hundreds of designs that are no longer available, but still totally desirable!  And in addition to the regular retired patterns, each month Jamberry releases a new “Hostess Exclusive” wrap that can only be earned through hosting parties, and a “Sister Style Exclusive” wrap that is only available for purchase for 1 month.

Unicorns!

sse all 2Enter the Jamberry Unicorn!  Any retired or hard-to-find wrap is considered a Unicorn.  And its all up to personal taste and how rare the wrap is. Ladies who love their jams trade them like baseball cards in Jamberry trading groups.  Its seriously addicting, and some designs are SO sought after, they go for $45+ on eBay.   Which is bizarre, who would pay $45 for a mani pedi?  Oh, that’s right, everyone who doesn’t use Jamberry!  But I digress…

That’s just disgusting. $45??

BACK FOR BLACK

Jamberry is catching onto this trend, so this year they are bringing back 12 months of Sister Style Exclusives!  They will be available for purchase from Black Friday, November 28 until Cyber Monday, December 1st.

Finishing Touch: How to tell the difference between the Jamberry Nail Wraps surfaces (tint, sparkle, glimmer, gloss, matte)

As you’ve noticed, Jamberry has a number of beautiful finishes, or surfaces, you can choose from.  Tint, Matte, Gloss, Glimmer, and Sparkle, to name a few!

Jamberry's New Official Image!

Jamberry’s New Official Image!

Each finish is different not only in the way it looks, but in its texture.  Jamberry gets their different finishes by printing onto different materials.  Some are thicker than others, some are more bendy and pliable.  General rule of thumb:  the thicker the material, the more heat you need to apply.

So in this post, I’m going to walk you through the surfaces, and their pros and cons!  (as well as show you a few pictures so you see how they look compared to each other)

Gloss.  This is the classic Jamberry finish.  Usually printed on clear or white, it is easy to work with and a has a consistent, shiny look.  Requires “normal” heat, about 4-5 seconds.  You’ll notice the wrap start to get bendy and pliable when you’ve applied enough.

Glimmer.  This is printed on a metallic backing (you can tell if you look at the “wrong side” of the sheet.  It is a little trickier to work with for some, so be sure to get rid of invisible cuticles and heat it a bit longer (so perhaps 8-10 seconds).  However, it also tends to last a little longer than gloss, tint, or mattes, because its sturdier.  You are trading application ease for longevity here.  And its just gorgeous.  Who can argue with that?

Icy Rose Polka with Rose Gold… and my favorite drink =D

Matte.  This is this thinnest wrap, and therefore the most delicate.  Very easy to apply, but you will want to be gentle with it.   And it has a non-shiny surface that most people only get by applying a matte top coat.  Requires less heat than the rest of the wraps.  I find this finish doesn’t last as long as the others, but I like to wear it from time to time to achieve specific looks for specific events… like halloween!

Candy Corn Matte

China Rose Matte

Tint.  One of my favorite finishes EVER.  It is slightly see through… and super easy to apply.  It requires less heat, and is very forgiving.  Plus, its LOVELY!  I wrote an entire blog post about it.

Haute Pink Tint

Tinted Classics

Sparkle.  This is the thickest wrap, and therefore requires the most heat. Give it a full ten seconds, or more… you’ll want to see it bending from the heat, but to keep it from curling on itself!

Don’t fear these sparkles, because they are GORGEOUS wraps, and totally manageable!  Most people hate sparkle nail polish because its hard to remove and it feels all rough from the glitter.  These are smooth, consistent, and gorgeous!  The best part, is that they are very sturdy, so if you get a good application they will last beautifully.

My Tips are Sealed: How to get a perfect Jamberry Nail Wrap application with no lifting and snagging at the tips!

One of the most annoying things I can think of is having my fingers snag on my clothes or hair.  So, in this post, I’m sharing with you how to keep that from happening!  You don’t have to use all these tools, but if you’ve been having trouble some of these may help you.

1.  Clip, don’t file.  The official Jamberry application video does show filing your wraps off your tips, but if you’ve been getting icky edges that way, try trimming the very edge of your wrap and taking some nail with it.  It produces a very clean, even edge!

Snip Snip Snip...

Snip Snip Snip…

2.  Give it a day.  I find that after 24 hours, my Jamberry Nail Wraps are completely set onto my nail, and the tips have settled and smoothed themselves out  Before I do any remedial tip-fixes, I wait it out to see if it will fix itself.  It usually does!

3.  Try the Strengthening Base Coat.  This is all some people need!  It seems to prevent lifting and results in a longer application for some! You simply apply it after you prep your nail and before you apply wraps.

Screen Shot 2014-10-26 at 10.10.58 AM

4.  The Glass File.  Some people swear by this.  Because its such a fine, gentle file, it creates a very smooth edge.  A lot of people like to file at a 45 degree angle instead of 90 degree, exposing a thin layer of their nail bed at the tips.  This makes it so they can use their nails as tools and not worry about peeling up the wrap when using their fingers to scrape something.

5.  Baggie Method.  I love this.  I do the baggie method probably 3-4 times per application, just to make sure the nail is settled the tips are tight!  If you haven’t seen this before, all you do is wrap your nail tightly with a ziplock plastic bag, and apply heat.  you can use any heat source (rice bag, hair dryer, mini heater) for this.  All that matters is that the bag is tight!

See how tight its stretched!

See how tight its stretched!

6.  Heat first, second … and maybe third and fourth (if you’re feeling ambitious)!  I find that when I heat my wrap before applying it to my nail (rather than following the cold application, where you apply the wrap and then heat it), I get a tighter seal, which results in smooth tips.

Now, adhesive side facing the heater, heat until it starts to look a little flimsy.

Heating the Jamberry nail wrap first makes a huge difference for me.

And then keep heating and smoothing throughout each application… and its ok to do 2 or 3 more times if you really want!  It will only improve the bond to your nail!  For the smoothing, you can use your rubber cuticle pusher or do the plastic baggie method, or even your good ol’ fingers will do a lot of good!  You can’t have too much heat (actually, you can if you try hard enough… so if you notice your wrap curling or melting or something, back it up a bit from the heater), but you do want to make sure that you…

7.  Cool your Jams before you file or clip! You can do this with good, old-fashioned patience and wait a few minutes for them to cool, or you can be impatient like me and grab a bag of peas from the freezer and stick your fingers on it.  Once they are cool, you are good to go!  Filing before they cool down can have a few problems.  (As we know, heat expands and cold contracts… so if you file your wraps while they are expanded and then they cool down, they will shrink on you after, leaving an insecure tip and maybe not covering as much nail as you wanted.)

Day 3 or 4 of Jaded sparkle… no lifting, super pretty! I used to fear sparkles but now I don’t!

A quick, secret tip about Jamberry Nails

I’m gonna let you in on a little secret about how to get your Jamberry Nail Wraps to last longer….

If you have grow-out that’s driving you nuts, just heat your nails up and slowly but firmly sliiiiiide the jams back toward your cuticles.  Then clip or file the bare tips!

photo 1

See all that cuticle space?? That’s gotta go.

photo 2

Heat it up!

photo 3

Then use your other hand to slide it down. It takes some time and patience but its worth it. See?? It moved!  Then just clip or file the tips to your jam!

Welcome to a whole new week out of your Jamicure!
